In 2007, 62% of all personal bankruptcies were due to financial hardships caused by the costs of medical care. For that reason, current president Barak Obama has been lobbying to reform the health care system and the health insurance quotes process in order to mitigate the expenses incurred by American families. This type of reform has been attempted several times over the last 30 years, always without much success. There has always been widespread distrust of both healthcare reform and the administrations that have proposed it, and many ideas which would have limited the amount paid out by consumers have been vetoed for fear of larger, hidden changes. While it is impossible to know the eventual ramifications of health care reform until the policy actually comes into force, the president claims that his aim is to make health care costs less onerous for working families, and there are number ways that these lessened costs are supposed to take shape.

The main goal of the new healthcare reform is to make American health care almost universal, and to put a federally-sponsored alternative in place for those who cannot obtain coverage through a standard provider. The concern with this type of coverage is that it will generate a) longer wait times and b) force consumers to pay more to assist with the health care costs of other individuals. According to the White House official website, however, this should not be the result. Instead, while over 95% of all Americans should be covered under the plan – including 32 million families that do not currently have coverage, there will be a substantial drop in the price of premiums as a result of a significant health care tax cut.

The plan also attends to address several problems currently experienced by working families trying to find reasonable health insurance quotes or making a claim on their insurance. First, the plan will prevent companies from denying or restricting coverage based on pre-existing conditions, making insurance as a whole more accessible. Second, the reform is intended to prevent insurers from abusing the system by limiting premium rates and holding insurance companies more accountable for their claims procedures.

While the new reform is a significant move away from the tradition way in which health care is currently administered, it may mean a significant step forward for the care of working families. By focusing in on issues like premium costs, capping out of pocket expenses and reducing the debt load currently carried by the nation, the president hopes to not only increase healthcare coverage across the board, but put the country in a better financial position. The hope is that working families will also find themselves in a better position.
