Same sex partners face consequential challenges earning acceptance, recognition, and respect. In 1981 the first debate and same sex insurance legislation occurred in San Francisco, although life partners have continued to struggle for conservancy and equity in health insurance. Many agents are disconcerted when providing health insurance quotes for divergent couples. Health insurance carriers unequivocally discriminate in group insurance and repudiate rights and privileges that traditional couples enjoy regarding sharing benefits with a person assuming the role and responsibilities of a spouse. Another option is to relocate to a state such as California, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Vermont, and New York that recognize same gender life partner relationships. Additionally, Canada legalized same sex marriages; some states and provinces accord these couples equitable legal rights and recognize and characterize a same sex domestic partnership as common law marriage. In fact, there are 12 states that recognize same sex couple commitment as a marriage and extend equanimity in the right to obtain health insurance benefits based on said relationship. However, until Congress modifies the law, same sex partners may have to obtain health insurance quotes from private insurers until the rest of the country realizes that love and commitment are not respecters of race, ethnicity, religion, or gender.
