Acquiring health care can be difficult even for people in good health who have funds to pay monthly premiums. People living in rural counties face challenges on top of those faced by people in urban areas. Rural counties can experience problems in acquiring health insurance quotes due to comparatively lower wages, lack of work-provided programs and unavailability of health care professionals. Rural health insurance problems are often overlooked by major media and this lack of exposure makes finding solutions all the more complicated.

Health insurance is not affordable for many Americans even for families with both parents working. If any member of the family has any condition that requires special or recurrent treatment, the price for premiums often goes up exponentially. In rural areas, work is not as easily found and pay is substantially lower than higher populated areas which can make health insurance an impossibility to consider. Having gaps in your insurance also makes companies less inclined to accept you as a client and rural Americans are often forced to go without insurance which in turn makes them uninsurable.

When people lack insurance and nearby medical facilities, they cannot seek assistance when injured or ill. Not receiving adequate care can lead to chronic ailment which not only reduces quality of life but can directly affect ability to work. The health of the community suffers as the workforce contends with illness which leaves less workers available. With fewer workers, the economy reduces which provides even less incentive for medical facilities to be constructed in the vicinity. An insurance company would view the area as an unnecessary risk-a larger than average proportion of uninsured individuals and preexisting conditions-so there is no financially viable reason for a company to extend its office into the area.

While there are many ideas being considered by politicians on how to provide adequate rural health insurance, the wheels of politics do not turn very quickly at the best of times and rural Americans are largely ignored due to their lack of political power. Finding companies that are willing to offer health insurance quotes often provide inflated rates since they view rural America as a monetary risk. This leads to the problem of under-insurance where people who manage to find private companies who will insure them are charged higher than average rates but do not receive comparable care.

An unhealthy population is a national concern and it matters not where anybody lives, sick citizens who cannot receive help affects all of us. Neglecting national health due to a numbers game is a plan for failure in the long term.
