Are you confused about how the new government policies will affect your health insurance policy? Many factors will be playing roles in the government policies which will go into effect in 2014. Whether you are insured or uninsured is one of the main factors.

If you are insured by your employer or you are paying for your own insurance, you can keep your current plan or buy coverage through new state-run exchanges. As of 2014, coverage cannot be denied due to existing health conditions nor will insurers be able to charge higher premiums. The new plans will offer minimum benefits package that include some basic preventive care free of charge. Families earning $250,000 or more annually will have to pay higher Medicare payroll taxes. Employers will provide vouchers to buy insurance on the exchanges if the employee's income is under $88,000 for a family of four.

If you are insured through Medicare your annual checkup will be free of charge. Deductibles and co-payments for many preventive services will also be eliminated. If you are insured and receive coverage from Medicaid, preventive services will be at no charge for you and your family.

If you are uninsured and have been denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions, insurance companies or exchanges will no longer be able to deny coverage. You will be eligible for coverage from a new high risk pool. Maximum yearly out of pocket expenses will be $5,950 for individuals and $11,900 for families. If you are not covered by your employer, and you earn too much to qualify for Medicaid, you will be able to buy from private insurers through exchanges starting in 2014. Health insurance coverage for people earning four times the poverty line will get subsidies from the government. They will pay no more than 10 percent of their income for insurance and the government will pay the remaining balance. Under the new government policy, health plans will have to cover at least 60 percent of the medical costs.

The vast majority of Americans will be required to buy health insurance or they will be subject to a penalty from the government in 2014.

The new government policies that will take effect in 2014 will affect all Americans and their health insurance policy. These new policies will allow for all Americans to have health insurance coverage regardless of their health history, gender, age, or other factors. Most Americans will be required to buy health insurance whether it comes from an employer group plan or a government exchange agency. Special provisions will be allowed for religious and cultural reasons as well as for financial hardship.
