Learn More About Health Insurance Rebates
Thursday, December 16th, 2010 by adminMany patients, when doing health insurance calculations, don't see insurance as being a place where they can get money back. They think of retail as a being a place for getting back a little of what they spent. So when patients hear about health insurance rebates, they find the idea a little confusing. It's okay to be in the majority of people who don't understand the way that health insurance and its rebate programs work. Here is a closer look at the process.
Rebates are not unlike the rebates that are given to customers at a retail store. In a retail setting, the customers purchase an advertised item, then they submit their receipt to a third party, or the manufacturer directly and they are given a money in the form of a check or gift card in the mail. This is common in the world of retail, but not common in the world of health care.
These days however, rebates are being given to those subscribers of a particular plan. The idea is to give patients money back for their membership to that insurance, or as a reward for keeping the insurance claims low.
For instance there are many health insurance calculations out there that have revealed an enormous number of people who see direct benefits from exercise. So, many insurance companies are offering rebates to people who participate at the local gym. If a patient signs up for a membership and works out a certain number of times in a month, then the patient would receive money back towards the cost of their membership. This is a great way to encourage patients to keep active which in turn could eliminate some of the claims being paid out for hypertension or heart disease therapy.
There are also some companies that will reward patients for low claim numbers by giving them back a small portion of their out of pocket health costs. There are a number of people out there who will qualify and gladly accept this rebate.
Rebates are also being given to smokers who are willing to make the choice to quit. Many patients can enroll in insurance sponsored quitting programs. These programs will help provide support to those not smoking. Many people who successfully complete the program will receive money off their monthly premiums. The money off may be picked up by the employer or the insurance company themselves. There are a number of people who don't make claims for themselves and the insurance company rewards them by giving them money back. It's a way insurance companies are giving back to their patients. It's a trend that should continue.
