How Driving While Medicated Can Lead To Health Insurance Termination
Sunday, January 2nd, 2011 by adminIf you have a health condition that requires you to take strong pain medications or other prescriptions that will impair your senses, you do not want to get caught driving while medicated. In fact, most prescription drugs will advise you that you should not operate any type of heavy machinery or drive while taking the medication. This is to help protect you and others. Your impairment is not in top form while taking these pills and if you are caught driving you could be arrested for a DUI and worse health insurance termination can occur by your carrier for the offense.
Do you read the pamphlet that comes with your medication when you get your prescription? Most people should read it not just for when it should be taken, but also for any allergic reactions and side effects that can occur from taking it. It will also advise you on what you can and cannot do while taking the drugs and how often it should be used. Most do not read the instructions and so are clueless when the drugs they are taking impair their judgment.
A DUI is most commonly given to persons that drink alcohol while intoxicated. Their blood alcohol level is higher than the state mandated driving limit. The police officer can request you to take a breathalyzer and or a walking test to see if you are drunk. A DUI has now become known for other influences as well. Some of these are drugs or anything that will make someone not drive with all their mental faculties. Driving while medicated is considered a DUI for law enforcement.
Health insurance termination can be due to driving while medicated and under the influence of prescription drugs. Why would an insurance carrier drop a customer for this purpose? They would not want to incur any charges that you may have for misuse of prescriptions. Many have recession rules in which they can use mistakes that you make against you. Even if the DUI may have occurred many years in your past it can be used.
Another reason is if you need major health care and the cost to obtain it is expensive they will look for reasons to reduce their costs. They may refuse to offer coverage or pay for certain procedures. They will perform an investigation on your past medical history as well as driving history. They can use this excuse to cancel your health insurance. This will make it harder for you to get coverage from another company. If you are able to get insurance it will be at a much higher cost. Driving while medicated is not something you ever want to do.
