Shopping for a health insurance policy can be a daunting task because of the wide varieties that you are given. There are three healthcare types that are the standard, multiple companies as well as a great deal of other features that come with each one. The more you understand your options, the more you will be in control of the costs that you will be paying for the monthly premium.

One of the most common healthcare types is that of the HMO. Health Maintenance Organizations or HMOs require you to specify a particular doctor in the "network" of providers as your primary care physician. This is the doctor you must see for everything - including getting doctor referrals to see specialists. If you go outside of the network at any time, you could be responsible for all of the costs involved.

A PPO is another type of healthcare and means Preferred Provider Organization. There is a network of preferred providers that you can choose from. There is no need to name a primary care physician and you can see any specialist or doctor - as long as they are in the network. This means that you don't need referrals, giving you better doctor access.

The third option is an HSA or Health Spending Account. Here, you are given a particular amount to spend each year. Some companies offer incentives for increasing the amount by taking health surveys and such to improve your overall health. You can go to any doctor that you want and pay a reduced cost. There is no money out of pocket, including deductibles, until you've exhausted the amount that is in the spending account for the year.

The HSAs and the HMOs have the best rates because there are limitations to both. If you don't want limitations and want to see whatever doctor whenever you want, then an HMO is going to be the best choice.

Whichever kind of health insurance policy you choose, you should get some price quotes to help you understand the costs involved. Start out with one health insurance provider and get a rate between an HMO, PPO, and HSA so that you can see how significantly they range. Depending upon where you live, your current quality of health and other factors, there may not be a very significant difference between the plans. Then again, it could be a considerable one.

Once you decide which the best option is for you, get quotes from different companies. This ensures that you get the lowest rate for the healthcare type that you want. Quotes can be received online or over the phone and usually only take a few minutes to get.
