Why Many Insurance Companies Do Not Cover Home Health Care
Monday, August 22nd, 2011 by adminHealth insurance companies typically have never provided home health care benefits to their insureds because home health care is extremely expensive. In addition to being expensive, most health insurance companies do not want to offer coverage that is typically offered by other companies.
Many health insurance companies do not offer home health care benefits simply because there are policies that are specifically designed to cover in-home health care expenses. Insureds who need this type of coverage typically secure a long term care policy, supplemental Medicare plan or other type of plan that provides in-home health care coverage that is traditionally not covered by health insurance. There are many companies that offer in-home health care benefits.
Most health insurance companies have not entered the in-home health care arena simply because they try to avoid offering coverage typically offered by another plan. Health insurance companies always avoid overlaps in coverage, so that is one reason why health insurance companies do not offer this type of coverage.
When an insured requires home health care benefits insureds often need services for months if not years. Typically, health insurance policies provide coverage for services offered on an in-patient or out-patient basis, but not services provided by healthcare providers at home. Most companies strive to provide benefits on a short-term basis not a long-term basis outside a hospital setting. That is why the government encourages people to purchase a long-term care insurance policy. The government wants to make certain that people know that most health insurance companies do not usually cover home health care benefits.
Health insurance companies have also decided not to enter the in-home health care arena simply because health insurance companies cannot cover all the other additional expenses that other plans cover in addition to home health care benefits. Most plans that cover home health care also cover living expenses as well. Since living expenses are not traditionally covered by health insurance companies, that is why most companies have stayed away from this type of coverage.
Even if these benefits were not offered by other companies, most health insurance companies would choose not to offer such coverage because in-home health care is extremely expensive. If health insurance companies offered in home care health benefits in addition to all of the other benefits, including but not limited to hospitalization, health insurance companies would be overextending the company by taking on too much liability.
As such, most health insurance companies have refrained from offering home health care benefits simply because home health care benefits are too expensive to offer and are typically covered by other types of policies, including but not limited to long term care benefits.
