How The Employer Mandate Could Affect Health Insurance Costs
Saturday, September 10th, 2011 by adminHealth insurance is a major part of life for people in the United States. People in the US will be required to have some form of health insurance coverage starting in the near future. The new health care reform law carries an employer mandate as well that is supposed to help with health insurance costs. There are many things about the new law that will affect the health insurance industry in the United States. Costs for health care coverage right now are determined by risk, age, and existing conditions. Not everyone has health insurance which helps to keep the overall costs down. Some people will pay less for health insurance in the near future while others will pay more.
The employer mandate is a very important part of the new health care legislation. This part of the law says that all employers with more than 50 workers have to offer health insurance coverage to everyone that works there. In the past, employers were able to save money by only offering health insurance options for select groups of employees like full time staff. Now employers have to provide affordable coverage for everyone that works for them or face steep fines and penalties. For every employee that is not offered coverage, employers will face a fine that is paid to the government. The bill also says that the option has to be reasonably priced for employers to avoid fines and penalties.
Until recently, employers offered health insurance coverage to employees and the employees were free to take advantage of that or opt out. Things have changed under the new laws and costs for employers are likely to increase. Employers will have to offer coverage to more employees than before and that will take a lot of money. The insurance companies can still bill in ways that keep them competitive, but people now need to obtain coverage. If an individual does not choose to buy health insurance, they will be fined as well. The health insurance costs for the country, employers, and individuals will likely increase as a result of this law.
Health insurance companies need to take in enough money every year to offset the expense of providing coverage to people that use it. People go to the doctor or the hospital and submit the bill to the insurance company instead of paying it. With more people being covered, health insurance companies will have to take in more money. This means that individual premium prices will increase to cover the losses the companies will face by having more people to cover. The employer mandate will cost companies a good deal of money now that they have to offer coverage to everyone.
