Rising costs are nothing new to those with health insurance plans. From employer-sponsored plans to those purchased by families and individuals on their own, it has become a fact of American life that health insurance is expensive and that it should only be used when absolutely necessary, if at all. Many have blamed the rising costs of treatment in general on the increased cost to consumers for their insurance, while others cite an increase in the use of medical facilities as the culprit for these increased costs. Health insurance companies themselves, however, also play a role in rising costs and, in many cases, can make or break the costs of care for a family.

Health insurance companies are often portrayed as faceless corporations that take advantage of those who are least able to pay for services. This has led to a culture of fear surrounding health insurance, with customers afraid of using a service or asking a question for fear that their rates will increase or that their policy will be dropped. It is important for consumers to remember, however, that a number of laws protect them from unfair actions committed by an insurance company and that insurance commissions in many states are able to arbitrate disputes. This, in combination with new laws on the horizon which will change the way in which health care is administered, aims to prevent consumers from being overcharged no matter what company they choose to use or what kind of policy they choose to purchase.

While some of the responsibility for rising insurance costs can be chalked up to a change in the way that health care is being used by consumers and an overall increase in administration costs with a greater patient load and new technologies, health insurance companies do bear some fault for the increased cost of insurance for their clients. In part, this is because of their drive to make a profit - they are private businesses, after all. Unfortunately, in the absence of strong legislation and with health care being so dependent on individual and family circumstances, some companies choose to take advantage of consumers by charging them as much as possible per month as well as significant amounts of co-pays throughout the year. This will often be accompanied by confusing policy documentation and a lack of customer service.

While companies do bear some responsibility for rising costs, some are trying to ensure that their clients are well taken care of and that they do not bear any more increase in premiums than is absolutely necessary. As in any field, it is worth a customer taking the time to explore options and find a company that provides affordable coverage.
